Founded in Dundalk, Co. Louth in 1824, P. J. Carroll is proud to be Ireland’s oldest tobacco company.
P.J. Carroll is one of Ireland’s oldest continuously operating businesses, founded by Patrick James Carroll in the North East town of Dundalk over 190 years ago. P. J. Carroll grew from a small shop to be one of the largest employers in the Dundalk region. We ceased operation at that site in 2008 and are proud that our factory is still an important part of the community as it has now become the campus of the Dundalk Institute of Technology.
P.J. Carroll became part of the Rothmans group in 1990 and eight years later Rothmans merged with British American Tobacco (BAT), the second largest tobacco manufacturer in the world with 44 cigarette factories in 41 countries. As a responsible legal Company operating in Ireland, we are committed to complying with the laws and regulations applying in this jurisdiction, as we do in every country in which we operate. Such laws and regulations control and regulate the way we manufacture, distribute and market tobacco products and also determine the levels of excise duty and other taxes applicable to the sale of tobacco products.
P.J. Carroll is committed to satisfy adult tobacco consumers with high quality products and aims at employing the best people to reach this objective.
We know tobacco products pose real and serious health risks and the only way to avoid these risks is not to use them. But many adults choose to smoke, so our top priority continues to be working towards reducing these risks and making available a range of less risky tobacco and nicotine-based alternatives.
Read more about the health risks of smoking, as well as our approach to harm reduction on our Group website .
We fully support laws and regulations prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18. We also believe that enforcement and penalties for breaking such laws must be tough enough to discourage anybody from selling to those who are underage.
We know how important it is that our marketing practices should not undermine efforts to combat underage smoking. That’s why we are required to follow our strict International Marketing Principles, which are globally consistent and demonstrate our commitment to marketing appropriately and only to adult tobacco consumers.
P. J. Carroll is committed to Youth Smoking Prevention and we support the Show Me ID – Be Age Ok – youth access prevention programme. This programme has been created in conjunction with a number of trade associations to provide Irish retailers with support, advice and best practice when dealing with age restricted products.
